How Much Is a Face Cord? $449 Explained

“Cord” is one of the most confusing words in firewood. Sellers use face cord, rick, full cord and truckload loosely, so two quotes that look similar can be very different amounts of wood. Here’s how to compare.

Face cord vs full cord

A full cord is a stack 4 ft high, 4 ft deep and 8 ft long — 128 cubic feet. A face cord (sometimes called a rick) is also 4 ft high and 8 ft long, but only one log-length deep. With standard 16-inch splits that’s 4 × 8 × 1.33 ft ≈ 42.7 cubic feet — one third of a full cord, or about 1.2 m³.

So a face cord of 12-inch wood is smaller than a face cord of 16-inch wood. Always ask what length the splits are.

What our $449 face cord includes

  • A full face cord (4 ft × 8 ft × 16 in) of kiln-dried hardwood, oak by default
  • Wood meter-tested before it leaves the yard (target under 15–18% moisture)
  • Free local delivery in Fairfield, Licking and Perry Counties, Ohio (orders over $200)
  • Optional stacking within 30 ft for $25

That’s roughly 20 of our bins, or about 50 of the small bundles sold at gas stations and hardware stores.

Why kiln-dried costs more than “seasoned”

Green wood is 40–60% water; you pay to haul that water, and your stove burns energy boiling it off. Air-seasoned wood usually sits at 20–30%. Kiln-dried wood is dried in a heated chamber until it’s ready to burn the day it arrives — more heat per log, less smoke and less creosote.

How to compare quotes

  1. Convert everything to cubic feet: length × height × depth.
  2. Ask about moisture — ideally a meter reading, not “it’s been sitting a year”.
  3. Check what delivery and stacking cost.
  4. Ask for hardwood species, not just “mixed”.

Not sure how much you need? Our firewood calculator works it out from your stove and how often you burn.
